How can I get a Work Visa in Singapore?

Getting a Singapore work visa has quite a direct approach; you just need an employer to do it for you.

Don’t lose hope just yet; allow me to break it down for you.

Although there are multiple work passes in Singapore, specific to skills and criteria, for now, have a look at the three main:

  1. Employment Pass
  2. S-Pass
  3. Work Permit

1. Employment Pass

The priority pass for highly skilled foreign nationals willing to work in Singapore and uplift the economy. Includes, managers, professionals, executives and specialists.

2. S-Pass

For mid-level skilled workers, usually includes technicians, foreign staff and associates.

3. Work Permit

For semi-skilled or unskilled workers required to fill specific sectors in need of labour, such as construction, marine shipyard, and manufacturing.

COMPASS

COMPASS is short for Complimentary Assessment Framework, and it is Singapore’s very own point-based system that provides clarity on the eligibility status for interested candidates. There are four foundational criteria in COMPASS. C1, C2, C3, and C4, and there are two bonus criteria as well. You must score at least 40 points, though it is specifically used for the Employment Pass.

How does the process actually work?

Step 1: Get a Job Offer

First and foremost, secure a job offer in Singapore.

Step 2: Employer Determines Which Pass Applies to You

After securing an offer, your employer will determine which permit applies to your case and will volunteer to apply on your behalf.

Step 3: Submit Documents

Now, you need to submit all your documents to your employer or registered agent to arrange your profile and assemble your application.

Step 4: Apply to MOM

Now your employer or agent will apply to the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore on your behalf.

Step 5: Assessment of your eligibility

The Ministry will then review your application and assess your eligibility with regard to your chosen work permit.

Step 6: Receive the In-Principle Approval (IPA)

Once you’re proven to be eligible, you will then receive an IPA, an approval or your ticket to finally move to Singapore.

Step 7: Relocate to Singapore

Pack your bags, take your visa, book the tickets, and relocate to Singapore.

Step 8: Complete Additional Formalities

After landing, complete additional formalities such as medical check-ups or registration.

Step 9: Get Your Singapore Work Visa

After all the formalities, your work pass/permit will be issued. Get hold of it, and congratulations on officially starting your international dreams.
